Periyar University, Salem (Tamilunadu) was established in year 1997 in memory of PERIYAR E.V.RAMASAMY, the rationalist and greatest social reformer in the 20th Century, by an Act of Tamilnadu State Legislature (Act No. 45-97) in exercise of the powers conferred by section 33 read with sub section (4) of section 57 of the Periyar University Act 401dated 11.08.1997 which is already included in the list of University maintained by the UGC under section 2(f) on the UGC act, 1956 vide notification No. F9-1I98/(CPP-I) dated 16-12-1998 and declared eligible to receive central assistance In terms of Rules framed under section 12(B) of UGC Act 1956 on 17-05-2005.
The Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE) was established in 2001-2002 to serve the students population and offers inter alia, Under- Graduate and Diploma, Post Graduate and Graduate Diploma and Certificate Courses. In 2007 Periyar University is approved as 4 Star / B+ graded University by NAAC and also its Distance Education has been approved by Distance Education Council (DEC). Open University System is established in the year 2005 and offers Undergraduate and Diploma Courses.

Admission through Approved Study Centers

The filled in application submitted through the approved Study Centre concerned through which the candidate seeks admission along with the following documents:

  • An attested copies of :

                                 Degree Certificate (or) Provisional Certificate
                                 12th (Pre Degree)
                                 10th (SSLC / SSC)

  • Identity card with a stamp size photo affixed
  • The candidate has to submit two Demand Drafts separately towards Courses Fees
  • One Demand Draft in favour the “ The Director PRIDE, Periyar Univetstiy” Payable at Salem and another Demand Draft in favour of the Study Centre concerned through which the candidate seeks admission

Admission Confirmation

After scrutinizing the application, the Directorate will confirm the admission to the eligible candidates by assigning them an En­rolment Number by issuing identity Card. Once the candidate is admitted his/ her registration Is valid for the entire period of study, Subject to the payment of course fees for the respective year.


Candidates who have already passed foundation courses or part 1 or 2 subjects as a whole in the degree examination of the periyar university of Examination or equivalent thereto will be exempted from appearing for foundation course (Paper I or II) as the case may be, subject to approval by the University. Students who seek such exemption should submit their requisition together with the following:

  • Original statement of marks in respect of the foundation courses or part or parts already passed by them as awhole.
  • Two attested Xerox copies of the above statement of marks.
  • Demand Draft for Rs. 100/-drawn in favour of "The Director, Periyar Institute of Distance Education" payable at Salem towards exception fee.

Candidates who have passed the Diploma in Commercial Practice Examination conducted by the State Board of Technical Education and Training, Government of Tamilnadu are eligible for admission to second year of the B.Com degree course at PRIDE. Such candi­dates are exempted from appearing for the first year examination of B.Com. Degree Course.

Candidates who have passed three year diploma courses as permitted lateral entry in the II year of Degree course in the same branch.

Condonation of Break in Studies

Candidates who have discontinued the course from the colleges or from the PRIDE and who seek admission in the pride in the Sec­ond orThird year of the course should pay a sum of Rs. 250 or such fee as may be in force form time to time towards condoning the break in study and for permission for rejoining the course.

Identity Card

Candidates should note that the examination Hall Tickets will be is­sued by the Chief Superintendent of the examination centers, only on production of the identity card. If the original card is lost, a duplicate card will be issued on payment of Rs. 50/- and the payment is to be made by means of an account payable De­mand Draft drawn in favour of the "The Director, Periyar Insti­tute, of Distance Education", Periyar University, Salem – 636011 together with a passport size / Stamp size photograph (Recently taken).

Despatch of Lessons

The Syllabus and the regulations of the course will be supplied along with the study material. The study material for all the courses will be supplied at the PRIDE / Study Centers. Students should make their own arrangement for the rec­ommended text-books for reference and study. PRIDE will take all necessary measures to supply study material for all the subjects. However late supply or non-supply cannot be ruled out under conditions beyond control such as non-re­ceipt of manuscripts and administrative bottlenecks.

Change of Address & Change of Name

Lessons and all communications will be sent to the can­didates to the approved study centers. Any change in the address should be intimated to the PRIDE and the Study Centers immedi­ately with enrolment number with a fee of Rs. 50/- by way of Demand Draft. The candidates are advised to make necessary arrangement in the post-office for letter redirected to their new address, until the change effected.

Students who wish to have their names changed in the records of the PRIDE at the time of admission or during the course of study must apply for the same with original Gazette notification a Demand Draft for Rs. 200/- drawn in favour of "The Director, Periyar Institute of Distance Education payable at Salem towards the fee prescribed for effecting the change enclosed along with the application. The fact will be intimated to the student concerned, only on his / her specific request.

Change of Course (or) Medium

Candidates are advised to make a firm choice of the course of study wish to pursue before sending the application for admis­sion. Ordinarily, change of course or medium once indicated will not be allowed, but in special cases a change may be permitted within one month from the date of admission on payment of the prescribed fee of Rs. 300/- subject to the approval by the au­thorities.

Change of Electives

Students desirous of changing the elective subject (if they fulfill the eligibility conditions) chosen at the time of applying for admis­sion, may apply for it on payment of Rs. 300/- either before at­tending the first personal contact program whichever is earlier.


i) The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates who pursue their studies through the PRIDE in Regular Stream are eligible for scholarship. The prescribed scholarship from and other particulars can be obtained from the Office of the Department of SC / ST Welfare at the District Head Quarters.          
ii) Physically handicapped and blind candidates, who satisfy the condition, can avail the State government Scholarship for the disabled. The prescribed form may be obtained from the District Rehabilitation Officer in the districts concerned. The filled in ap­plication has to reach the Director, PRIDE within 15 days from the date Of Admission.     

Bonafide Certificate

Students who are in need of Bonafide Cenificate may apply to the Director, PRIDE with a Demand Draft for Rs.100/-drawn in favour of the "the Director, Periyar Institute of Distance Educa­tion" payable at Salem.

Arrear Candidates

Students who have arrear papers, after the completion of the du­ration of the course of study, have to seek and Obtain on their own initiative with a requisition letter and with self addressed enve­lope, this particulars of change of syllabus, provision for comple­tion of course practical classes, practical examination, Examina­tion Application forms from the Director, Periyar Institute of Dis­tance Education, Periyar University, Salem-11. The coordina­tors of Study Centres may be able to give available particulars in all the communications to the PRIDE, the arrear candidates should write their Enrolment number and address.


1. Examination will be conducted by the university at the end of each aca­demic year /
    semester and the dates for which will be noti­fied.
2. The examination for all course will be conducted various centers in Tamilnadu and other
    states, depending upon the num­ber of students.
3. There will be two examinations on each day generally the­se examinations are held between
    from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. in forenoon, and from 2.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. in the afternoon.
4. Examination will be held on all days including Sundays and other Holidays to enable the
    candidates who are employed to attend the examinations.
5. The answer scripts will be subjected to single or double valu­ation according to the rules in
    force for all courses.
6. Examination will be held normally in the month of June-July and December - January each
    year. The PRIDE reserves the rights to hold examination during any other period as may be
    decided by the University.
7. Application for examinations are normally to be submitted in the PRIDE through the
    respective study centres on or be­fore the last date and time specified along with
    examination fees by means of DD in favour of the Registrar Periyar Uni­versity, payable at
8. Application forms will be sent to the students through, Study Centres, Candidates who have
    completed their course and appearing for arrear papers should also write in the PRIDE to
    obtain their application forms.

Application forms for examination will be sent in the month of October and April by the Controller of Examination, Periyar university to all the students through their study centers who have to arrears of fee information regarding Centres of Examination, time table, fees payable and Qther regulation governing the exami­nation will be sent to the students along with the Examination ap­plication form. Students with short of attendance either in the Theory or in the practical are not eligible to sit for the examination, In spite or their warning a student failing to fulfill the attendance requirements gets himself / her self for the examination and writes the examina­tion his / her results will be cancelled.

Hall Tickets

The Hall Ticket will not be sent to the candidates by post. Hal Ticket will be issued at the Examination Centers three days prior to the commencement of the Examination. The intimation of venue of examination with the Examination Registration number will be sent to the Pride Study Centers one week prior to the commencement of examination. The students are requested to collect necessary information from Study Centers.

Further, a student who has applied in time and not received any hall ticket at the examination centre is required to contact the, PRIDE Study Centers with the Xerox copy of his / her examination application form, the demand draft for examination fees and acknowledgement etc., so as to enable to Chief Superintendent of Examination to allow him / her to write the examination provisional1y subject to the confirmation by the Controller of Examination. Examination Results and Issue of Statement of Marks

For al1 enquires regarding the examinations, publication of results, issue of Statement of Marks and Provisional Certificate, candidates will have to contact the Controller of Examination, Periyar University, Salem 636001. Ph. No-O427-2346022, E-mail the examination result will be available to the students in the respective Study Centre in which they are admitted. Students are advised to collect their statement marks from the 'PRIDE Study Centres in which they are admitted.
